Be Prepared:  Bring the “Tips from Kids” column from your local newspaper. Write down any related facts.

Be Respectful:  Remember, adults have plenty of experience, because they have been around for a long time.  Often, they aren’t accustomed to learning from kids, so don’t turn them off by being too opinionated or bossy. (Be sure to use your best listening skills too.)

Be Calm:  Remember that you can set the tone of the conversation, both for yourself and the adult. If things do go well at first, try to stay relaxed.

Be Flexible:  If the adult doesn’t engage in your discussion, the time might not be right.  Wait for a better moment, when the adult isn’t distracted.

Be There:  With many adults, conversations work best in person. Text messages, e-mails, or similar formats often are less effective ways to communicate with adults.

Be Confident:  Of course, you can help people learn.  And it feels great too.   Think of all the terrific things you’ve learned from adults.  Now, as you grow older and wiser, it’s your turn to return the favor.

Conversation Starters:  Here’s just a few examples:

  • “Dad, do you have a minute? Check out this interesting column.”
  • “Hi Aunt Lucy.  You know, I’ve noticed something interesting recently.  Want to hear about it?”
  • “Hey, Coach.  I found something that you might want to check out.”
